The history of Winkhaus1939 to 1945In the years between 1939 and 1945, like many other producing companies in Germany, Winkhaus is forced to change direction. Growth is put on hold, as it had been once before during the time of the First World War. Aug. Winkhaus mainly produces cartridges for rifles and pistols. Again and again increases in production are required, which can only be delivered by expanding operations still further. The longer the war lasts, the wider the gulf becomes between the interests of business and those of the State. For Aug. Winkhaus too, the constraints of the war become increasingly difficult to deal with. |
1943
On 10 October 1943, Münster is devastated by heavy bombing. Large parts of the town centre are completely destroyed. Although the area around the site on the Bohlweg is heavily affected, the factory itself sustains relatively minor damage.
Nach 1945
Following the end of the war, the company finds itself squeezed from other directions. With relationships with contacts overseas in ruins, Aug. Winkhaus concentrates on business within Germany. The company is able to put sales back on an upward trend quickly by adopting more cost-effective production methods. Within just a year, Winkhaus restores its workforce to 250.
