Cookies and browser settings

The help button of most web browsers explains you can set up your browser to block acceptance of new cookies, have your browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or how you can switch off all received cookies. Similar functions, such as Flash Cookies, which are used by browser add-ons can be switched off or deleted by changing the settings of the browser add-on or via the website of the producer of the browser add-on.

In the following we explain you can adjust your settings in order to refuse or accept cookies in the five most commonly used browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Apple Safari):

Internet Explorer:

  1. With Internet Explorer open, click on the 'Extras' button and then 'Internet options'.
  2. Click on the 'Privacy' tab. The settings for accepting or rejecting cookies can be adjusted with the slider and the settings 'High, Medium, Low'.
    • Accept all cookies: slide the slider down to accept all cookies
    • Block all cookies: slide the slider up to block all cookies An exact indication of which cookies are blocked or allowed in each case is shown next to the slider.
    • Only block cookies from third parties: Click the 'Advanced' menu item in the 'Privacy' tab and select the field corresponding to 'Block third-party cookies'.
  3. Then click 'OK' in order to confirm the setting.

Mozilla Firefox:

  1. With the Firefox window open, click the 'Firefox' button (on the 'Extras' menu item in Windows XP) and then select the 'Settings' submenu.

    • Keep until 'Firefox is closed': Cookies which are stored on your computer are deleted when you close Firefox.
    • Keep until 'ask me every time': A warning message is shown each time a website attempts to save a cookie. You can then allow or refuse the cookie.
