Winkhaus protects the critical infrastructure of an entire region

NIS2-compliant access control strengthens security in Chojnice

The municipal waterworks in Chojnice (Poland) have modernised
their infrastructure and now rely on the blueEvo electronic locking system from Winkhaus. As a critical infrastructure operator, the company is responsible for supplying the region with drinking water and treating its wastewater. Consequently, the waterworks prioritised security and efficiency when selecting its access control system. Previously, a mechanical locking system was used. At last count, there were more than 200 individual keys in circulation. "Allocating and issuing all these keys was a challenging administrative task for us," explained Marcin Krzywosadzki, head of the wastewater treatment plant. The result: no track of the number of keys in circulation, considerable administrative effort, and an increased security risk.

The operator therefore decided to switch to the blueEvo electronic locking system from Winkhaus. The conversion involved 166 electronic cylinders, 27 padlocks and 7 Virtual Network Hubs. Thanks to blueEvo, the waterworks benefit from centralised management and flexible access control.

The BE blueControl software enables flexible management of access authorisations across all locations. Employees use their identification media to retrieve up-to-date authorisations at Virtual Network Hubs. This creates a wireless virtual network between BE blueControl and the components, which is ideal for extensive properties. In addition, each employee only needs one key. This facilitates access control transparency and implifies day-to-day administration. "The system allows us to record every access promptly and completely. This increases security and improves the monitoring of our infrastructure," explains Joanna Trzebinska, Head of Water Production.

The introduction of blueEvo has enabled the Chojnice Waterworks to modernise its safety architecture and comply with legal requirements, such as the NIS2 Directive. Employees may now work faster, more securely, and more flexibly at all locations. This is a decisive step towards ensuring the security of supply throughout the entire region.
